Biography
Megan Torti was appointed Principal Flute of the North Carolina Symphony beginning in the 2024–25 season, holding the Mr. and Mrs. George M. Stephens Chair. Before joining the orchestra, she performed regularly with the New York Philharmonic and appeared with the Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, and Tulsa Symphony, as well as the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, among others. She has also performed as guest principal flutist with the Baltimore Symphony.
She has spent summers performing at the Tanglewood Music Center, Spoleto Festival USA, Eastern Music Festival, and Aspen Music Festival.
As a soloist, Torti earned first prize at both the International Latin American Flute Competition and the New Jersey Flute Society’s Young Artist Competition. Her solo appearances include a recital broadcast on Chicago’s WFMT classical radio and a performance at the National Flute Association Convention in a program spotlighting Latinx composers.
A dedicated chamber musician, Torti was awarded an Ensemble Forward grant from Chamber Music America and recently performed in the North Carolina Symphony’s “Concert Insights” chamber series. She also took part in the New York Philharmonic’s Sony Classical recording, A Gathering of Friends, featuring John Williams and Yo-Yo Ma.
Torti holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where she received the Hugo Kortschak Award for outstanding achievement in chamber music. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, graduating with distinction in research and creative works. Her principal teachers include Robert Langevin and Leone Buyse.
